About us
We are what we are
We are a platform for reading, thinking, discussing, and ultimately learning. We attempt to stimulate regular reading, help with complex classic, modernist, and postmodernist texts, and provide motivation for reading in foreign languages. We try to make sense of the world around us with the help of literary texts – and along the way, we ask ourselves difficult questions.
What we are not
We are not looking for a mass audience and a large profit. We keep our live classes small, around 12-15 people maximum. We will not seek quantity at the expense of quality. Instead, we work with each participant and listen to her or his suggestions.
Are we a book club?
Yes and no. Our Intellectual evenings’ course might be qualified as a book club with some academic input. However, we also provide other courses and thus are a combination of a book club/academic seminars/ expert discussions/ personal development and well-being support service.
Policy & Rules
What is our policy?
We are inclusive, ethical, transparent, and friendly. We have no language policing and no discrimination on any grounds.
What are the rules on this platform?
We ask all our participants to be kind, open-minded, and have respect towards each other. These are the only rules on the platform. After all, it can be difficult, but is mighty helpful for our own broad-mindedness, to be exposed to a different opinion.
Who can join?
We welcome everybody from any part of the world. Keep in mind though that most of our discussions are held in English, so you should have a good understanding of the language. If you are not there yet, it’s alright. Check our Intermediate English reading group or opt for the Individual coaching during which our coach will support both your reading and your language development.
Live classes
How many participants are in live classes?
We keep our live classes small, around 12-15 people maximum. This way, everybody gets attention and can talk without any fear of a large audience.
Where do I find a link to the live class?
You will receive the link to the live class after purchasing the offer. Please, pay attention to time zone differences!
How many classes per month do you recommend?
It depends on how much you want to read. We recommend committing to just one course, either monthly or weekly. But do come regularly and prepared!
Do I have to read what is assigned for a class?
Ideally, yes, because this is the main idea – we guide your reading, motivate and set a deadline, and you read. Committing to one course means that you end up reading at least 12 books per year that otherwise would remain unread. And an unread book – it’s like an unlived life on your shelf. However, if you just want to try our courses or for some reason couldn’t finish the assigned reading, it’s alright, too. Come by anyway and listen, and decide yourself whether you want to read that book or not.
Coaching
I am a very busy person, but I miss the times when I could read books. I am interested in your idea and would like to arrange a private coaching to read more. How does it work?
These days we all have busy lives and are juggling different tasks and responsibilities. To find time to read regularly or to finish that one book that you’ve been postponing for ages, might be difficult. So we’ve figured out what works as motivation: commitment, guidance, deadline, and gentle control.
Standard Coaching at Readingspace works with all four:
1) Commitment: firstly, you commit to reading by enrolling and paying. However little you pay, it gives you a mental note that you’ve started something new and now should assign some time for reading.
2) Guidance: secondly, we write you or arrange a video call with you and listen to your requirements/wishes/expectations. Together, we create an individual strategy that works for you – what to read, how much, when, what academic input or linguistic help you might need, etc.
3) Deadline: thirdly, we set a reasonable deadline for you, and for many people, deadlines work like magic. We send a personal reminder to you just before your reading time starts.
4) Gentle control: finally, to ensure consistent results, we create a schedule for you and expect regular pictures of how many pages you read daily. Thus, we help you to read what you needed or wanted to read, but postponed, and ideally, together we create for you a habit of regular daily reading.
5) In case it’s not enough for you, with our Advanced and Advanced+ coaching plans, we arrange live one-on-one reading sessions during which our coach reads together with you just as running coaches run together with new runners. This way, you are fully supported all along the way.
Your questions
I would like to take part in your live discussions, but I am not sure if my language skills are sufficient and I am afraid to talk. Should I try anyway?
Yes, absolutely. We are perfectly aware of how difficult it is, to express yourself in front of an audience, especially in a foreign language. We did it many times and every time we were terrified at the beginning. This is why we want to create a friendly environment where people from different cultures and with different 1st languages could come together, read and discuss high-quality texts. At Readingspace, we are not judging each other’s language or ability to talk, but are practicing and getting better. If, however, you feel that your understanding of the language is not sufficient, too, do check our Intermediate English reading group or opt for the Individual coaching.
The class wasn’t what I expected. Do you refund?
Yes. And we won’t ask any questions – but will appreciate your feedback to [email protected] so that we could improve next time!
I’ve done everything that your coach proposed but it didn’t work for me. Do you refund?
Yes, we do. And we won’t ask any questions – but will appreciate it if you tell us what went wrong to [email protected] so that we could think of a better strategy!
I have another question and/or a suggestion…
Perfect! Please, write us to [email protected] . We are willing to improve every day and are looking forward to your questions and suggestions!
